Adobe Illustrator
For this Illustrator selfie portrait, I elected to use a cel-shading style in order to create a more graphic look to the piece. I picked colors directly from the source image, which created a natural palette that worked well at the cost of low overall saturation. In addition to this, the few more saturated elements of the blues and yellows pop as a result of the more ashy earth tones. The large basic shapes that make up the face, hair, and jacket allow for smaller, more complex shapes to suggest details across large planes. I am especially proud of the neck and shirt area, where the two-toned shading creates the illusion of depth the most successfully and pushes the head further into the foreground as suggested. All and all, this was a very well executed work that I ended up deeply proud of.
